The Introduction Of The Nigerian Stock Market

The Nigerian Stock Exchange was established in 1960. According to the Nigerian Stocks Online website, the NSE became a member of the Federation of International Stock Exchanges, now known as the World Federation of Exchanges, to develop its international reputation.

History

The NSE was established as the Lagos Stock Exchange in 1960; the name of the exchange was changed to the Nigeria Stock Exchange in December 1977. The Maps of World website notes that the original listing of 19 securities in 1960 had grown to more than 250 listings by 2009.

Branches

The development of the NSE has continued throughout its history with branches opened in Nigerian cities at regular intervals. The NSE now has branches in Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Kano, Onitsha, Ibadan, Abuja and Yola.

International

In a bid to develop international investment in the NSE, the Nigerian government repealed legislation restricting foreign investors, according to the Nigerian Stocks Online website. By 2010, brokers and investors from around the world were free to trade in Nigerian stocks without restriction.
