Many fireplaces are updated with a fresh coat of paint to disguise outdated brick. Keeping the fireplace looking as new as the day it was painted takes a little bit of elbow grease. Soot, dirt and grime can all be found on the surface of a painted fireplace. The more the fireplace is used, the more dirt gets on it. Use a few cleaning tips to keep a painted brick fireplace looking fresh and spotless.
Instructions
1. Clear all objects from the fireplace. Take a vacuum and use the brush attachment to remove all dust and spider webs.
2. Mix a mild solution of warm water and kitchen soap in a bucket. Wear rubber cleaning gloves or disposable latex gloves to protect your skin. Gently wash down the fireplace using a soft sponge. Scrub any stains or spots lightly--too much scrubbing can damage the paint finish. Use extreme caution if a faux finish is applied to the brick. Spray a gentle all purpose cleaner onto spots, but do not let sit for more than one minute.
3. Use a soot sponge, or a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, for soot stains. Rub the surface lightly to remove any stains. Remember to always test the surface in an inconspicuous spot prior to cleaning .
4. Use touch-up paint to cover any remaining spots that cannot be removed. If spots are severe, consider painting the fireplace with stain-blocking water based primer followed by a coat of latex paint. Remember to keep the extra latex paint to touch up spots that will occur in the future.
