German business culture may appear Americanized with its extensive use of English and its plethora of international companies, but nevertheless, the Germans still have their own, distinct business culture, which isn't always the most obvious for Americans.
Greeting
Business greetings in Germany are comprised of punctuality, a firm handshake, stating your name and then an exchange of business cards.
Planning Ahead
Germans are known for their planning expertise, so it's good to plan a business proposal that goes well into the future.
Taboo topics
Surprisingly, discussing the World War II is not a taboo subject with most people, but should not be bought up by you. Taboo subjects, however, do exist, such as anti-Semitism or Nazi atrocities.
Meetings
German meetings usually last less than 45 minutes, but rarely less then 20 minutes. Small talk is essentially not required, as Germans like to get straight to the point.
Language and Formal Address
Formality is built into the German language with the informal "du" and formal "sie." The latter is always used unless told otherwise. However, you will not necessarily need to speak German to conduct business in Germany.
