Native American tribes from the Pacific Northwest built totem poles to depict an animal from their kin. Animals were carved and painted on long logs and erected in villages to remind the tribes about the connection they had with them. Children can make totem poles to depict family members. Paint colorful faces on the totem poles and can include pets if you like.
Instructions
1. Cut out the bottom of each coffee can using the can opener.
2. Paint the picture of one family member on each coffee can with the water-based paints and paintbrushes.
3. Select the coffee can you want to place at the top of your totem pole.
4. Make a 1-inch hole at the center of each plastic cover using the craft knife.
5. Cut out the spouts from the plastic milk bottles using the scissors. Recycle the parts of the bottle you do not require to make the totem pole.
6. Draw a pair of wings on the detergent bottle using a pencil and cut them out using the craft knife. Recycle the remaining part of the bottle.
7. Place the plastic covers on both the top and bottom of each coffee can. The uncut cover will be used to crown the totem pole.
8. Wrap duct tape on the wooden dowel rod. You should have a 6-inch layer of duct tape on the dowel. Start wrapping the dowel from its bottom end.
9. Add the coffee cans on the dowel and use the milk bottle spouts to separate them.
10. Place the wings before putting the last can on the top of the wooden dowel rod.
11. Push the wooden dowel into the ground to display your completed totem pole.
