Bill Engvall
was the host of "Lingo" as of 2011.
"Lingo" made its debut in 2002 on the Game Show Network. It became the channel's top-rated original program, and international versions aired in 20 countries. In June of 2011, comedian Bill Engvall became its host. The game gives contestants the first letter of a five-letter word. Each team of contestants then guesses a letter and be the first to identify the whole word.
Instructions
1. Watch the show. You don't have to know the saudition, but it helps if you know how the game works. This will make it easier for you when you go through a practice game at the audition.
2. Make your own list of five-letter words from the dictionary or educational websites.
3. Practice with a partner. Quiz your partner on common five-letter words that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Memorize two or three good words for each letter. Practice a way to remember which letters you have already tried. Contestants frequently panic and repeat a letter they have already used.
4. Use words with three different vowels, like "House," for your first guess. For your second guess, use the other two vowels in a word like "Hairy." This will tell you which vowels are in the word.
5. Pay attention to the letters that appear in the word but are in the wrong position.
6. Remember common two-letter pairs. If a word begins with letters like T, S, or W, chances are good the second letter might be H.
7. Think about what your opponents need to complete the puzzle. It may be better not to take a wild guess since it may help the opponents since they can eliminate one more letter. If you let time run out, they get only one letter added to the board. There is still a chance they might get it wrong.
