Global warming has the potential of adversely affecting plants, animals and humans.
Since the late 1990s the world has seen the 10 hottest years on record. Many scientists believe that it is because of climate change caused by greenhouse gases and other factors. The United States is responsible for 22 percent of the greenhouse gases released into the environment, in spite of only making up around 4 percent of the world's population. Although it may seem like an overwhelming task, there are some things even individuals can do to help stop the climate change that leads to global warming.
Support Sustainability
No matter how "green" you are as an individual you could still be contributing to climate change. It is important to show your full support to companies and manufacturers who are taking a stand and adopting those same "green" principles. This could range from supporting local organic farmers who choose not to spray with chemicals or use unnecessary machinery on their farms, to buying a car that is more energy efficient than most -- and using it only when absolutely necessary. Start by researching companies and manufacturers you currently support to find out what their stance on climate change is.
Alternative Sources of Energy
People have the choice to use and support the use of clean energy. Yet the use of non-renewable resources such as coal and oil continue to be used as power generators. "Dirty" energy will continue to be used as long as there is a demand for it, so it is up to the inhabitants of Earth to shift that demand to something clean and sustainable. Also, it is important for people to remember that their own energy can also provide a good alternative to some fuels. Walking or biking to work, to the park or to the store means you are not putting more unnecessary pressure on the environment.
Spread the Word
It is well and good that you may be passionate about the prevention of climate change. However, it is only by working together in large numbers that people can make a considerable difference to the future of the world. By sharing facts and information with friends, family, teachers, sports teams, coaches, groups or churches you are a part of the change. By even converting one person to a greener way of thinking you have made a step in the right direction.
Join Environmental Groups
It is all about action in numbers. One voice is great; thousands is better. By joining either local or national, or even worldwide, environment groups you can add your voice to an established group actively making a difference. You can learn more about climate change and how you can help and also take part in organized peaceful protests and campaigns.
