Look Up a Business by Its Tax ID Number
You can find the name and contact information of a business when the only information you have is its federal Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN). The Internal Revenue Service is the best place to start. This is because a company with a federal tax ID must file tax returns.
Instructions
1. Gather the information you have. Aside from the EIN or federal tax ID number you are researching, knowing whether it is a for-profit or not-for-profit organization also can prove helpful. If you have any other information, such as the state in which the business is located, keep that handy, too.
2. Start you search at the source: the IRS. You can simply enter the tax ID number in the search field on the IRS website. If the company is in the IRS database of not-for-profit organizations, you will be provided with the e-Postcard filing for that company, including all of the contact information.
3. If you know the business is for-profit, or if you got no information from the IRS search engine, contact the IRS Telephone Assistance for Businesses toll free at 800-829-4933. You sometimes may get the information directly through an IRS representative if he believes you legitimately need access to the information. You must explain where you obtained the tax ID number and why you require the information.
If contacting the IRS via telephone yields no results, try your local IRS office in person.
4. If all else has failed you at this point, you can try one of are several search companies. For example, BestPeopleSearch.com has a reverse EIN lookup service, and EIN Finder has an online database. There is a fee for these services.
