Armed Guard Certification
Armed security guards are an essential part of loss prevention and safety. They are generally employed in the private sector, working to keep businesses and residences safe. Armed security guards must fulfill several requirements and complete training hours to become certified.
Minimum Requirements
Most states require that you are at least 18 years old to apply for an armed guard position. You must complete a criminal background check and pass a drug test to be hired.
Education
Becoming an armed security guard does not require a degree or formal academic education. However, if you wish to enter into a management position, an associate degree or certificate in criminal justice is helpful.
Training
Once hired by a security firm, you will be required to go through some training courses. The amount of classroom time and the specifics of those courses vary by state. Generally you will learn about property rights, emergency protocol and detaining suspects. Armed guards must complete weapons training, along with a proficiency test, before being certified.
