Algebraic thinking is part of the sixth-grade math curriculum.
The goal of the sixth-grade math curriculum is to aid students as they make their transition from arithmetic to the process of algebraic thinking. The sixth-grade math course is made up of content strands that include problem solving using decimals, percents and fractions, operations, concepts, as well as an introduction to ratios and integers. Emphasis is placed on reasoning, problem-solving, communication, representations and connections.
Number and Numeration
Students are expected to understand meaning, use and the representation of whole numbers, know the equivalent names for numbers, and understand common numerical relationships. Students will become familiar with place value when used with decimals, whole numbers and come to understand the concept of percent as a number. Students will also learn round whole numbers.
Operations and Computation
Students are expected to be able to compute accurately through the use of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division procedures when working with whole numbers, decimals, fractions and mixed numbers. Students are expected to make computational estimates and explain how the estimates were obtained. Additionally, sixth-grade students are expected to understand the meaning of operations and the model used for operations when problem solving.
Data and Probability
Students will learn to interpret and analyze data and are then expected to be able to select and create an appropriate graphical representation of given or collected data. Students will also be expected to understand and apply the basic concepts of probability.
Measurement
The sixth-grade student will practice using the metric system when doing measurements. Students are expected to understand the Celsius system for temperature as it applies to weather, the body, indoors, and when used with both the boiling and freezing point for water. Students are expected to understand the systems and processes used to take measurements involving length, weight, angles, perimeter, area, volume and capacity. The students will also learn to use and understand reference frames and coordinate grid systems
Geometry and Spatial Sense
Students will learn investigate properties and characteristics of two- and three- dimensional geometry shapes that include lines, angles, and plane and solid figures. The sixth-grade student will also learn to apply transformations and symmetry in geometric situations.
Patterns, Functions, Algebra
Students are expected to understand patterns and functions using algebraic notation, tables and graphs. Students will learn apply algebraic notation to represent and analyze situations and structures when solving number sentences that are used in order of operations.
