The Typical Earnings Of Dietetic Specialists

A dietetic technician may offer nutrition guidance.


Dietetic technicians assist dietitians in creating food service and nutritional programs for patients. Dietetic technicians work under the supervision of dietitians and may take on tasks such as meal planning or educating others in food and nutrition. Dietetic technicians can be found in environments such as restaurants, schools and hospitals.


National Salary


The mean hourly wage for dietetic technicians was $13.72 and the mean annual wage, or average salary, was $28,530, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009.


Experience


PayScale lists the salary of dietetic technicians based upon their years of experience. In October 23, 2010, dietetic technicians with less than one year of experience earned between $10 an $14; one to four years, $13.36 to $15.53; five to nine years, $13 to $15.72; and 10 to 19 years, $14.32 to $17.47.


High Employment


General medical and surgical hospitals employed the largest number of dietetic technicians with an average salary of $29,960, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009. Other industries that employed large numbers were nursing care facilities, $26,060; community care facilities for the elderly, $24,240; local governments, $29,310; and elementary and secondary schools, $28,100.


Top-Paying Industries


Offices of other health practitioners paid the highest average salary above all other industries to dietetic technicians with $38,450, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009. Other industries that offered high pay were: nursing care facilities, $34,580; community care facilities for the elderly, $32,810; local governments, $31,240; and elementary and secondary schools, $31,210.


Top-Paying States


Minnesota paid the highest average salary above all other states to dietetic technicians with $37,580, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009. Other states that offered high pay were: Maryland, $37,130; Ohio, $36,400; Connecticut, $35,310; and New York, $34,500.
