Make Affordable Lighting From Bamboo

Bamboo is a renewable resouce, excellent for crafts and small projects.

Bamboo is an important renewable resource. Used with a simple solar powered light, you have an energy-efficient and sustainable light for your garden. With a little ingenuity and careful scavenging and recycling, each solar bamboo light can be built for less than $10. This do-it-yourself outdoor light is an easy project for a parent and child. A child can point to the light proudly and say, "I did it myself."

Instructions

1. Select a bamboo pole with a 3/4 to one-inch center hole. Decide how tall to make your outdoor light. Add 6 inches to the length to allow for pushing the pole into the ground. Cut the pole to that length. Sand the cut edges--bamboo splinters are sharp.

2. Buy an inexpensive copper-colored solar landscape light on a stake. Remove the stake and insert the solar light base into the bamboo pole. After checking for fit, glue or epoxy the light to the pole.

3. Gently push the bamboo pole into the ground. You may have to pound a piece of rebar into the ground to make a hole for the bamboo. If the center hole of the pole is wide enough, you can push the pole onto the rebar. Otherwise, pull the rebar out and push the bamboo into the hole.
