Make Use Of A Fax Modem

A fax modem allows you to send documents to any other fax machine. It will also allow you to receive faxes over your phone line into your computer. The CD that comes with your fax modem usually includes software to operate it, along with software for connecting the modem to the Internet.

Instructions

1. Read the instruction book that came with your fax modem. The book will designate which type of expansion slot to use to place the modem card inside your computer.

2. Turn your computer off, unplug it from your AC outlet and remove the cover. Install the fax modem by following the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Put your computer cover back on the machine. Plug the computer cable back into the electrical outlet. Attach a phone line to the jack marked "line" on the fax modem. Do this as you would normally hook any phone to a phone jack.

4. Turn on your computer and allow it to boot. Most newer operating systems will find the fax modem automatically and install the software needed to run the device. If the fax modem is not found automatically, place the CD into the CD drive and follow the on-screen instructions to install the device.

5. Use the fax program that came with your modem to send and receive faxes. Normally, this consists of opening the program, specifying a phone number and telling the software which file or files you wish to fax. Alternately, programs such as Word give you the option of faxing the document on the File menu. Click on the File menu, then Sent To, then select Fax Recipient. Follow the on-screen instructions, choosing your fax modem when prompted.
