Windows CE is an embedded operating system that can be used on mobile devices.
Windows CE is an embedded operating system made by Microsoft. An embedded operating system is used for embedded systems, such as cell phones and GPS. Microsoft offers certification for Windows CE 6.0 development, called a Microsoft Certification Technology Specialist certificate.
Recommended Experience
Microsoft has published a list of requirements that it feels is the appropriate level of experience prior to getting certified. Overall experience for embedded systems should be between two to three years. It is also recommended that developers taking this certification exam have worked directly with Windows CE for one year, and at least six months with the 6.0 update of Windows CE. Microsoft feels that the employees most likely to benefit from this certification are those who are on the front lines of development and implementation for embedded system applications.
Advantages to Certification
A Windows CE certification may be required by an employer, either during the course of employment or as a condition for being hired. This certification can be advantageous on a resume when seeking jobs in the embedded systems field.
Knowledge Required
The exam is divided between six different main topics, with many subsections covering the practical and theoretical side of Windows CE. Topics covered includes configuration of the operating system, building on the operating system, monitoring and maintenance, debug and testing methods, customization of board support, and developing drivers for devices used on the embedded operating system.
Exam Information
The exam taken for Windows CE certification is called "Certification Exam #70-571: TS: Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Development." This is the only test required for the certification. It is a two-hour test on average.
Testing Center
The Windows CE certification exam is a proctored exam, so you have to take it at an official test center. Microsoft uses Prometric for testing. Prometric has many testing centers across the country, and you can register for tests through its website.
