The tax ID number is used when filing corporate taxes.
A tax identification number is issued to entities such as partnerships, corporations and trusts for tax reporting purposes. The number is obtained at no charge through the IRS website. In order to request a tax ID number, the entity must be in the United States or its territories.
Instructions
1. Visit the Internal Revenue Services website and access the "EIN Assistant" online tool.
2. Click "Begin Application" and select the legal structure of your business. For example, if your business is a joint venture, click the radio button next to "Partnerships."
3. Enter the physical address, telephone number and start date for the business in the appropriate fields.
4. Provide additional details about the business such as the function of the business.
5. Select your preference for the method of receiving your IRS tax identification number. You can select either "Receive Letter Online" or "Receive Letter By Mail." If you opt to receive your tax ID number by mail, it may take up to four weeks to receive the number.
6. Review the information entered on your application and click "Submit." If the information is incorrect, click "Start a New Application."
7. Save the letter containing your new tax ID number on your computer if you chose to receive the letter online. Click "Continue" to review additional information regarding your new tax ID number. Close the browser window.
