A mission statement focuses on the purpose of a business and what it hopes to accomplish. Your company was established to provide a service to consumers or to do a better job than the next guy. Mission statements succinctly define the role of the company and help keep management on track. Here's formulate a company's mission statement.

1. Develop a vision statement. A vision statement is created by deciding what you want for the company in the future. Companies with a clear vision have the basis for formulating a concise, action-oriented mission statement.
2. Think of the future. A "call-to-action" mission statement is one that provides direction to the company. A mission statement may be revised as the environment and organization changes, but an effective mission statement stands the test of time.
3. Elicit an emotional response. Your mission statement should be a motivational tool for employees.
4. Focus on what is special about your company. The statement needs to exemplify what makes your business stand out.
5. Use language that is easily understood and applicable. The mission statement needs to describe why the organization exists.
6. Make your goals tangible and measurable. By keeping the goals reachable, employees can be motivated. If the goals are too far-fetched, employees can get discouraged.
