Develop A Barn Door For Any Shed

If you have a garden shed and you want to build a barn-style door for the shed, start by visiting your local lumber store. You can probably find everything you need there, sans the door hinges. Locate the door hinges at most home improvement centers. A barn door is utilitarian in nature and usually not full of ornate design features. Therefore, building a barn door is a great entry-level DIY project for the average homeowner.

Instructions

1. Measure the width of the door at the top and bottom of the door opening. Measure the height of the door opening. This gives you the necessary measurements for your door.

2. Divide your door opening width by an integer that will give you a whole number. For example, if your door opening is 36 inches, select boards that measure 3 inches in width. This means that you will need 12 boards to build the door. Alternatively, choose six 6-inch boards or three 12-inch boards. Do not use boards that will require you to cut down the length of the board unless you absolutely have to.

3. Cut the boards to the necessary length you obtained in Step 1 with a miter saw.

4. Cut three 1-by-4-inch boards to the width needed for the door.

5. Place the door-length boards face down and butt them all side by side.

6. Place the 4-inch boards across the backside of the vertical boards. Place one board in the center of the vertical boards, place the other approximately 10 inches from the top and the third approximately 10 inches from the bottom.

7. Secure the vertical boards to each of the three horizontal boards with 1 ¼-inch wood screws and a screwdriver or drill.

8. Flip the door over and place the door onto the horizontal boards. Place the barn door hinges onto the door and line them up so they run overtop the horizontal boards secured to the back of the door. Secure the hinges to the door with the screws supplied with the hinges.

9. Place the latch onto the front of the door across from the hinges and line it up with the center horizontal board. Secure the latch to the door with the supplied screws and a screwdriver or drill.

10. Place the door handle onto the door where you want it and secure it to the door with the supplied screws and a screwdriver or drill.

11. Hang the door in the opening and then secure the hinges to the face of the shed with the supplied screws and a screwdriver or drill.

12. Close the door and place the other side of the door latch onto the front edge of the door opening. Secure the door latch to the shed with the supplied screws and a screwdriver or drill.
